Money Is a Magnifier: The ionava Founding Story

“Money is a magnifier. It can magnify the good, or the bad, depending on how you want to use it.”
This is the belief underneath everything our CEO, Jennifer (Azar) Burnham-Grubbs, has built, and the reason she pivoted in a career she was winning to build something new.
For the past 20 years, Azar worked deeply in the insurance field through her own award-winning firm, Quantum Insurance Services, with more than $100 million in products under management. Celebrities, athletes, business owners, and everyday families all came to her because she was known as the person who could make insurance actually work for you—the math nerd and people-person who read the fine print, knew which carriers reacted best to which conditions, and worked in a commissions-agnostic way so her advice stayed clean.
And through all of it, despite her best efforts, she kept arriving at the same conclusion: the health insurance system was deeply, exhaustingly, infuriatingly broken.
She watched families with employer coverage get handed surprise bills for a service center they never knew was out-of-network. She watched doctors attempt to compress important care into seven-minute visits because contracted rates left them no room to breathe. And she spent a year and a half (!!) fighting to get basic speech, physical, and occupational therapy approved for a client’s child with severe autism, care that experts agree changes a child’s life when it comes early.
“I got so sick of trying to help people while feeling so powerless to give them good value through their insurance.”
That’s the part that made her want to change the health insurance industry. Twenty years of sitting across the table from real people, getting into the weeds because she felt responsible for them, and slowly realizing that no amount of expertise could fix a maze designed to trap the people moving through it. The money in the model was getting put to use in a completely backwards way - feeding the system itself, rather than the people on whose lives the system was built.
Somebody would have to fix it.
For a long time, she thought she wouldn’t have to. She figured the industry would correct itself—that a group of the smartest insurance minds in the country would finally get pulled together to solve the thing at its root. She half-expected the call herself.
The call never came, and she came to understand why. The people with the power to change the insurance industry didn’t understand it deeply enough to touch the root cause, and the people who understood it were too busy selling inside it.
So she did the math on what the system was quietly costing people. Every year, premiums climbed and took a bigger bite out of the income people needed for the things that actually keep them well—good food, movement, moderation, financial security, and in-depth time with a doctor for preventive care.
“For most people, there’s less and less to put toward the things that actually keep us healthy. Everybody’s just on this hustling hamster wheel, trying to keep up with the inflationary model that health insurance is generating.”
So Jennifer stopped waiting. A life path, a profound level of expertise, and an opportunity all lined up at once—and she decided it was her turn to build the answer: ionava.
